3 Travel Skincare Hacks Every Jet-Setter Needs

Look your best even when you’re in the clouds

Travelling can really wreck our skin if we don’t make the proper changes in our skincare routine to take care of it. That’s why we spoke to Diane Lee, Master Therapist at aesthetic company Yakson House, for some advice for common travel skincare conundrums, and pro-tips for keeping skin fresh and smooth, no matter where you’re going.

1. Can I wear makeup when on a plane?

I would discourage this as cabin air is very dry and doing so may accentuate dry patches. If you have oily skin, the dry air may encourage it to produce even more sebum, leading to oily build-up.

2. I have a zit but no skincare products to target it. Help!

If you have aspirin, crush four to five tablets and add a few drops of water to form a paste. If available, add some honey for its antibacterial properties. Leave the paste on the spot for 15 minutes and rinse off. This should reduce redness and inflammation.

3. How does one deal with water retention or bloating on the plane?

Avoid alcohol, caffeinated drinks and salty snacks that can dehydrate the body. Instead, keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water. During long flights, walk around to boost blood circulation.

To reduce puffiness and improve blood circulation, give yourself this simple face massage:

1. Rub palms together for 10 seconds, then place them over your face.
2. Gently pinch the end of your eyebrows with your thumb and index finger, and move them in an upward motion. Repeat five times to stimulate your acupoints.
3. To reduce puffy cheeks, clench your fists and use the middle joint of your index and middle fingers to rub your cheeks in an “O”-shaped motion 10 times. Repeat in the opposite direction.
4. Use the middle joint of your index and middle fingers to massage along your jawline from your chin to ear.
5. Rub the sides of your neck from the area below your ears down towards your shoulders using the middle joints of the index and middle fingers. This will ease muscle tension and encourage the release of toxins.
